Hired Blades are the highest-tier close-combat infantry (or cavalry in early versions of Mount&Blade) troops available in the mercenary troop tree. They are upgraded from Mercenary Swordsmen, and can often be found in taverns.

TacticsEdit

The fighting ability of Hired Blades is comparable to that of Swadian Knights, albeit dismounted. They will win with ease against equal numbers of Sea Raiders. They are armored in a Haubergeon and either a Guard Helmet, Great Helmet or a Bascinet. They also have Mail Chausses or Iron Greaves complemented by Leather Gloves .

They are armed with either a Heavy Bastard Sword or an Arming Sword with a Horseman's Heater Shield in the other hand. They always fight with the shield however, and never use the Bastard Sword as a two-hander.

Due to their unusual appearance (heavily armoured and dismounted), Hired Blades are easily picked out on the battlefield. However, they are powerful fighters and not to be trifled with. Their relatively small shield makes them vulnerable to ranged attacks, however. They should be backed up with ranged troops to make them most effective. In close quarters, Hired Blades can carve up most any opposition because of the well-balanced nature of their equipment, not making use of unwieldy two-handers or large cumbersome shields. They should be protected from cavalry, who will run rings around them, especially Khergit Horse Archers who can make short work of them.

Hired Blades will be the shock troops of a mercenary army, out in front to tie up the enemy while the (usually) larger numbers of Mercenary Swordsmen behind close in to finish the job. They do their job well, even for their high price and upkeep. As an added bonus, they are considered mounted for the purpose of calculating a party's movement speed on the world map. This is due to the fact that in earlier versions of the game, they actually were mounted.

Stats and equipmentEdit

Note: Troops have a set of default stats; at the beginning of a new game, these stats are randomly adjusted for each type of troop. The following is the default set for this troop as seen within the game code and may not reflect the specific stats you will see during actual gameplay. For more information, see Troop stats.
