The Circassian is a medium cavalryman of the Crimean Khanate. It is a third-tier horse archer unit, and they are usually found in low numbers within Crimean armies. As Regional Mercenaries they can be hired only in Azaq-kale and Kilburun Fortress.

You can recruit them as prisoners, or by hiring them from a cavalry commander from a town/fort that you may or may not own, as long as you are part of the Crimean Khanate.

Circassians wear good armor and wield good weapons, making them reliable horse archer units that rival the Lithuanian Tatar, Veteran Mirza Chambul, and Cebelu, as well as the Kalmyk for its equipment, stats and archery skills. The only downside is that they ride slower saddle horses and lack a shield.

They wear a chain mail vest, a chain mail miziurka, and eastern riding boots. They are armed with a Kalmyk bow and good saber and ride saddle horses.

Tactics[]

As horse archers, Circassians are reasonably efficient at peppering enemy troops with arrows while on horseback, but because it has an average mount and lacks a shield, it is prone to being out-maneuvered by horsemen with better mounts and is vulnerable when surrounded or being charged by a soldier armed with either a lance or pike. The best tactic for the Circassians to be supported by other lower or high tier horse archers to increase the rate of fire of their bows, backed up by marksmen at a distance.

Trivia[]

  • The term Circassian refers to an ethnic group that inhabited the northwestern Caucasus, in a region known as Circassia, but now live mainly in Turkey and the Middle East due to being exiled by the Russian Empire in the mid-1800s. The remaining Circassians still living in the historical region of Circassia are better known as the Adyghe, though strictly this is a collective term for only some of the Circassian tribes.
  • In the game, Azaq-kale, where Circassians can be hired, falls in historical Circassia.
  • The Karachay-Cherkess Republic, a federal subject of the Russian Federation, and its capital Cherkessk (not to be confused with Cherkassk), is named after the Circassians.
